The Glasgow City Innovation District (GCID) Venture Studio is a pioneering model for fostering entrepreneurship and innovation. Through four key pillars—Challenge, Make, Innovate, and Impact—it provides funding, mentorship, and collaboration opportunities to accelerate business growth, drive inclusive economic development, and position Glasgow as a global leader in innovation. 

Purpose of the solution

The Venture Studio was established to address gaps in early-stage business support, facilitate industry-academia collaboration, and boost Glasgow's innovation ecosystem. By integrating structured funding, mentorship, and sector-specific challenges, it fosters inclusive entrepreneurship and drives innovation across industries, ensuring sustainable economic growth and global competitiveness for Glasgow.

Impact

Since launching in 2024, GCID's Venture Studio has engaged with over 50 businesses, distributing targeted funding to innovation-driven enterprises. It has strengthened Glasgow's space tech and AI sectors, nurtured creative entrepreneurs, and supported underrepresented founders through tailored business development programs. These initiatives have led to increased investment, startup success, and cross-sector collaboration. 

What is innovative about it?

Unlike traditional accelerators, GCID's Venture Studio simultaneously supports multiple businesses through a structured, multi-pillar model. By integrating direct funding with peer collaboration, expert mentorship, and international engagement, it maximises impact while fostering a self-sustaining innovation ecosystem. Its focuses on inclusivity and sector-specific challenges which differentiates it from other support programs. 

Who are the main users?

The Venture Studio serves startups, SMEs, social enterprises, and creative businesses within Glasgow's innovation ecosystem. Key beneficiaries include technology-driven entrepreneurs, industry collaborators, underrepresented founders, and businesses seeking to scale. Academic institutions, investors, and policymakers also engaged with the Venture Studio to drive long-term economic and social impact for the city.

Who runs it?

The Venture Studio is led by Glasgow City Innovation District, in collaboration with key partners including the University of Strathclyde, Scottish Enterprise, and was funded by Glasgow City Council and the UK Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund. The GCID team oversees the Studio's operations, working closely with industry leaders, investors, and innovation experts to deliver targeted support, funding, and mentorship. Each of the Studio's four pillars—Challenge, Make, Innovate, and Impact—is delivered in partnership with sector-specific organisations, ensuring tailored support for participating businesses.
